Violent crime is on the rise in America. CJR is examining it at its roots.
Cities across America saw a surge in violent crime in 2020, amid a crucial year of police violence, protests, and police killings of Black citizens. 2021 may see rising murder rates in some major cities, according to police.

Cultivating innovative, culturally responsive solutions to lasting systemic issues is paramount in the Center for Justice Research’s mission in justice reform, including violent crime. As one of the few justice research institutions located in a historically Black university in one of the most diverse cities in the country, CJR is in a unique position to approaching gun violence. That’s why we’re excited to partner with Thurgood Marshall College Fund and the National Collaborative on Gun Violence to understand gun possession among young males living in urban areas.
This one-of-a-kind directly examines youth gun violence, which has been largely ignored in the national criminal justice reform discussion. CJR is collaborating with other HBCU’s in urban areas to understand how Black males ages 15 to 24 view and possess guns, and their trigger points. Contributing HBCU’s and cities include Baltimore and Coppin State University; Jackson, Mississippi and Jackson State University; and Wilmington by way of Delaware State University.
Through interviews and a quantitative secondary analysis of existing data sources, CJR and our colleagues will provide effective, evidence-based solutions to a longstanding crisis in America.
