Systems Thinking

This course will examine justice reform using a systems approach that enables social justice leaders to integrate self-awareness, cultural competence, visionary leadership, team learning, and the use of mental models into their decision-making capabilities. Students will learn to shed their linear thinking and focus on systems in their entirety to address reform. Students will also learn how to:

  • Evaluate potential reforms by asking essential questions
  • Establish the importance of evidence-based practices
  • Build reform-driven partnerships
  • Employ effective communication techniques in successful reform efforts
Researcher Development

This course provides a broad exploration of Culturally Responsive Evaluations (CRE) and the concepts of social power and privilege, particularly as applied to program evaluations. This course addresses a variety of interdisciplinary, cross-cutting competencies related to professionalism, systems thinking, leadership, and program evaluations and assessments.

Applied Research and Statistics

This course presents essential principles of applied research design and data analysis to implement within the students’ respective environments that inform broader social justice conversations. Course materials integrate foundational elements of research methods, data analysis, and data visualization.

Trauma-Informed Care

This course provides an organizational structure and treatment framework that involves understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma. It also emphasizes physical, psychological, and emotional safety for both consumers and providers and shares tactics on how to help survivors rebuild a sense of control and empowerment.

Ethics for the 21st Century

This course provides ethical training by stimulating moral imagination, enabling a recognition and development of analytical skills for addressing ethical issues within communities.

Managing Workplace Conflict

This course will help administrators, supervisors, and managers explore the various roles HR professionals play in managing workplace conflict. It also shares methods to communicate an organizations conflict-resolution procedures and how to measure the effectiveness of those procedures. The course does not examine the details of procedures for settling conflicts but how to leverage available resources when needed.

Unconscious Bias and Micro-Behaviors

This course is designed to help students prepare for some of the ethical dilemmas and demanding situations they will face in their daily lives, especially in the workplace.

Adverse Childhood Experiences

This course investigates the health and social effects of negative childhood experiences and provides students with the tools to identify the best practices for building and maintaining resiliency. Strategies such as identification and assessment, reducing risk and exposure, and nurturing resiliency are effective interventions. This course will elevate students’ knowledge of trauma and provide ways to work with families, communities, and employees to reduce the impact of trauma.

Empowering Responsible AI

Integrating Responsible AI principles in education promotes fairness, transparency, and accountability. It encourages critical thinking and responsible decision-making in AI use, preparing students and professionals for the AI-driven future.

This course provides a broad exploration of Culturally Responsive Evaluations (CRE) and the concepts of social power and privilege, particularly as applied to program evaluations. This course addresses a variety of interdisciplinary, cross-cutting competencies related to professionalism, systems thinking, leadership, and program evaluations and assessments.

Equity 101

This course will explore and analyze the vast power the criminal justice system exerts over all our lives. Starting with the legislators who pass laws, to the law enforcement officers who enforce those laws, to the courtroom actors who argue over and interpret the laws, and the correctional officials who conduct the sentences imposed by the courts; the entire system is marked with an incredible amount of discretion. Discretionary decisions that are made throughout this continuum can have lifelong and devastating consequences. The purpose of this course is to advance understanding of disparities in criminal-legal processing, while providing incite and recommendations to make the criminal-legal process more equitable.
