HOUSTON (February 1, 2021) - The Center for Justice Research (CJR) at Texas Southern University (TSU) has received $1.5 million in funding from Houston Endowment to expand its criminal justice reform efforts. CJR focuses on research that reduces race and class-based disparities in the criminal justice system.
“The Center is thankful for the generous gift from the Houston Endowment supporting our efforts to advocate for a more just and equitable criminal justice system,” said CJR founding director Howard Henderson. “It is a testament to our commitment to reimagining criminal justice as one that is shared with Houston Endowment, for which we are grateful.”
Since its inception in January 2018, CJR remains at the forefront of reforms within criminal justice through its evidence based research, strategic collaborations and commitment to community focused engagement. Located on the campus of Texas Southern University in Houston’s historic Third Ward, CJR maintains a pipeline of culturally responsive researchers to find solutions in a complex criminal justice system.
Houston Endowment is a private foundation that partners with others in the nonprofit, public and private sectors to improve quality of life for the residents of greater Houston. The endowment annually provides approximately $70 million in funding for projects that enhance civic assets, promote post-secondary success, and build a stronger region.
Through this partnership, CJR and Houston Endowment will continue to improve the lives of Houstonians, especially members of historically marginalized communities and the most vulnerable persons who are often overrepresented in our criminal justice system.
