Dr. Howard Henderson appointed to the board of directors for the Houston Recovery Center
January 8, 2021
Dr. Howard Henderson has been appointed to the board of directors for the Houston Recovery Center, an organization that provides sobering centers as an alternative to jail for those struggling with addiction.
The appointment is a natural selection as Henderson is the Founding Director of the Center for Justice Research at Texas Southern University, where researchers work to create a more equitable criminal justice system by identifying culturally responsive solutions to complex, systemic issues. The services of the Houston Recovery Center align with CJR’s ultimate goals for criminal justice reform, which includes providing treatment for substance abuse instead of incarceration.
The Houston Recovery Center served 6,835 unique clients and performed 19,325 total services from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020.
The center offers an innovative, proactive service model guided by their commitment to accept each individual where they are, while offering them recovery assistance and support directed at their individual needs.
Dr. Henderson is a professor of Justice Administration in the Barbara Jordan - Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University. He is an expert on culturally responsive criminal justice research, program evaluation and predictive bias. Dr. Henderson serves as an advisory board member of the Vera Institute’s Rural Jail Research Policy Network, a member of the National Scientific Advisory Committee at the Institute for Justice Research and Development at Florida State University, and a member of the National Science Foundation's STEM Opportunities in Prison Settings workgroup.
