Second Chance Month: People, Institutions, and Criminal Justice Reform
The Education, Leadership & Culture Series is focused on the role education, institutions, and networks play in the formation of children, youth, and adults in the United States and abroad. It is organized and moderated by Gerard Robinson, Vice President of Education at the Advanced Studies in Culture Foundation and a Fellow of Practice at the Institute. In this session, panelists discuss what dynamics have enabled mass incarceration and the difficulty the formerly incarcerated face during reentry. The series is produced in partnership by the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture and the Advanced Studies in Culture Foundation.
This session’s panel features:
- Stanley Andrisse, Executive Director of From Prison Cells to PhD, and an endocrinologist scientist and faculty member at Howard University College of Medicine and Georgetown Medical Center;
- Tierney Fairchild, Executive Director of Resilience Education and an educator in a certificate program for incarcerated adults through a program supported by the University of Virginia Darden School of Business;
- Howard Henderson, Founding Director of the Center for Justice Research and Professor of Justice Administration in the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University, and an Institute FellowHeather Rice-Minus, Senior Vice President of Advocacy and Church Mobilization at Prison Fellowship, the nation’s largest Christian nonprofit serving prisoners, former prisoners, and their families;
- Syrita Steib, Executive Director and Founder of Operation Restoration, a New Orleans nonprofit that supports women and girls affected by incarceration to recognize their full potential, restore their lives, and discover new possibilities.
